This is a commission stage design project, I’m a stage designer in this drama. The director tries to recreate the drama Miss Julie by August Strindberg under a modern drama language. There are various drama languages, such as dialogue, body movement, and light. when we involve cross-media interaction and combine it with basic body language, a new language can be created to allow the audience to gain new experiences and new perceptions from it. Conducive to the formation of a specific symbol on the stage. The director contacted me because I’m good at creating digital narrative interaction projects. We discussed how to add interactive mediums and connect to performers as a part of the narrative in Miss Julie, I had a few initial ideas from Kinect camera body tracking projection mapping interaction to sound interaction mapping, but those ideas haven’t been taken, because they are unstable and lack of flexibility in a big stage due to a good experience we need provide to massive audiences. We finally agreed with the idea of using simple light and shadow behind a translucent film to interact with performers, and it reveals the core concept of “Gaze” as Miss Julie lives in an environment where people are stared at all the time, everything she and the people around her do will be peeped, these peeps happen not only in the scene set by the script - the kitchen, may also be the garden, the living room, and even Miss Julie’s room curtain is set like a screen, the original function is to cover the privacy and prevent some things from being peeped, but, because of its translucency, outsiders can see what happened inside through it. They are the source of the gaze, one of the shackles imposed on Miss Julie, and this was the main reason I decided to use this half-transparent film as a main background with light and people performing behind to create this type of gaze and also Miss Julie’s inner change.

Big thanks to assembly team, lighting design team and actors for making everything perfect
